Nestled at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, Glenorchy serves as a gateway to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular wilderness. Having lived in Queenstown for many years, I always loved going on day trips out to Glenorchy and have done pretty much everything there is to do there.
Beyond its iconic red shed and weathered jetty, Glenorchy has plenty of fun and enjoyable activities and things to do that cater to all types of travellers.
Whether you’re looking for an adventure filled activity, an epic hike, or simply wanting to escape into nature, this small settlement packs an enormous punch when it comes to outdoor experiences.
To help you plan your trip, I’ve put together a list my favourite activities that make Glenorchy a destination worth exploring.
Best things to do in Glenorchy
1. Visit the wharf and boat shed
This is THE ICONIC photo spot. The old wharf and boat shed have become the most popular spot to pay a visit to when in Glenorchy. It is easy to see why, with the red colour of the shed beautifully contrasting with the snow-capped mountains in the background.
Located right on the lake, this spot is not only easy to get to from town, but also provides some of the best views around. Learn about the interesting history of the area from the information boards inside the shed, before wandering down to the end of the wharf to soak in all the natural beauty.
No matter how many times I find myself out in Glenorchy, I will always pop down and get a photo down at the wharf.
Whether you’re seeking a picturesque view, a moment of calm, or a glimpse into Glenorchy’s past, the wharf and boat shed is one place you do not want to miss.
2. Jet Boating with dart River Adventures
The Dart River Jet in Glenorchy, offers an exhilarating way to experience the stunning natural beauty of the region. In my opinion, this is the best jet boat ride in the Queenstown area and is the one that everyone raves about.
This thrilling jet boating adventure covers up to 90 kilometres of breathtaking landscapes along the glacier fed Dart River. The surrounding mountains make the perfect backdrop for this epic adventure.
As you glide over crystal-clear waters, you’ll have the opportunity to witness unique wildlife and learn about the area’s rich Maori history. The tour lasts 2 hours, making it a perfect addition to your itinerary of things to do in Glenorchy.
3. Funyaking on the Dart River
Like the sound of exploring the Dart River by water? Then you should definitely check out the Funyak experience also offered by Dart River Adventures.
These inflatable kayaks drift gently along the bright blue river, winding through hidden channels, ancient beech forests, and dramatic landscapes carved by glacial forces.
Starting with an exhilarating jet boat ride up the Dart River, the journey quickly transforms into a tranquil paddle through scenery straight out of Middle-earth. If you’re wondering why it’s called Paradise Valley’s, one look at the surroundings will answer your question.
Just a short drive from Glenorchy, the road to Paradise is one of the most stunning drives in New Zealand, winding through ancient beech forests and past braided rivers.
There are plenty of things to do in Paradise, from scenic walks and photography to simply soaking in the serenity of nature. Film enthusiasts will also recognise this magical location as a backdrop for some of scenes in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
If you are looking to enjoy nature away from all the crowds then a visit to Paradise is a must-do.
5. Enjoy a Coffee at Akin
Akin Cafe (formerly known as The Trading Post) has been a popular spot for delicious coffee and sweet treats since 2007.
Situated in the perfect location close to the lake and the famous Red Shed, Akin pride themselves in producing top quality food and drinks while being eco conscience at the same time.
I personally love their coffee and others I have spoken to say the carrot cake is to die for! There are plenty of other things to choose from too, which you can enjoy inside or out in the cute garden setting.
6. Mrs Woolly’s store
Mrs. Woolly’s serves as both a café and a retail space offering a wide range of local products and crafts. Visitors can enjoy delicious coffee and homemade treats while browsing through unique souvenirs, outdoor gear, and artisan goods.
The shop not only provides a cozy spot to relax but also serves as a hub for information on things to do in Glenorchy.
I find Mrs Woolly’s is very popular with tourists as it is on the main road on the way into town. During peak season it can get a little busy, but if you don’t mind waiting in a bit of a line you will be rewarded with some great tasting food and coffee.
7. Glenorchy Lagoon Walk
The Lagoon Walk, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and those looking for scenic beauty. This easy, flat track meanders through stunning landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the tranquil lagoon.
Even on a rainy day, the lagoon is still beautiful as always and is great if you aren’t the biggest fan of long hikes. The walk can be split into two sections with the smaller loop perfect if you are short on time and the bigger loop if you want to explore a little bit more.
There are a few benches scattered along the path which have become quite popular photo spots. This is often the image you will see of the lagoon all over social media.
The Lagoon Walk is one of the top free things to do in Glenorchy for visitors looking to immerse themselves nature while enjoying a leisurely outdoor activity.
8. Paradise Ziplines
Paradise Ziplines offers an exhilarating way to experience the stunning natural beauty near Glenorchy. While there are other ziplining tours in Queenstown, I think the scenery through this area combined with the adrenaline filled ziplines is pretty hard to beat.
Set in a lush canyon surrounded by ancient forests and rugged peaks, this eco-adventure features a series of ziplines that soar above turquoise rivers and dramatic rock formations. With eight ziplines ranging in length and height, it’s an unforgettable blend of adrenaline and breathtaking scenery.

The Earnslaw Burn hike near Glenorchy is a breathtaking adventure into some of New Zealand’s most pristine alpine landscapes. The track is 8.3 kilometres one way and can take anywhere form 4 to 6 hours to get to the viewpoint.
This challenging backcountry track rewards hikers with unforgettable views, including cascading waterfalls, rugged rock faces, and the impressive glacier that looms over the valley.
I have not yet done this walk, but it is at the top of my to do list when I am next back in the area. The stories I hear and the photos I see from friends who have done it are jaw dropping.
Many hikers choose to camp overnight to make the most of this epic location. If you don’t have time for the overnight hike, it is possible to walk back the same day, but this is generally not recommended.
10. High Country horses
High Country Horses is an awesome way to explore some of the most beautiful backcountry scenery New Zealand has to offer. They’ve got treks for everyone, whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned rider and is often ranked highly among the things to do in Glenorchy.
You’ll wind through open fields, splash across crystal-clear rivers, and take in jaw-dropping views of mountains and lush forests. The guides are super friendly and love sharing local stories along the way, making it feel less like a tour and more like an adventure with mates.

11. Hike Mt Judah
The Mount Judah hike is a great option if you’re after some epic views and a good workout. It’s a bit of a climb, but totally worth it once you hit the top.
The walk will take you around 2-3 hours one way so make sure you give yourself enough time to complete it.
You’ll trek through beautiful beech forests, wide open tussock fields, and then up to the summit where the views are incredible. From the top, you can see the Dart River valley, Lake Wakatipu, and the Southern Alps stretching out in all directions.

The Glenorchy Animal Experience is a great activity for anyone who loves animals and wants to get up close with some cute and friendly creatures. Located just outside town, you can meet and feed a bunch of animals like sheep, goats, and chickens with over 100 animals on site.
The self guided tours lead you through the farm from pens to ponds and open paddocks. It’s a relaxing but fun way to spend a few hours, and the best part is the backdrop – you’ll be surrounded by some stunning scenery.
Whether you’re traveling with the kids or just looking for a fun, laid-back experience, it’s definitely worth checking out!
13. Routeburn Track
The Routeburn Track is one of those hikes you’ll never forget. It’s a multi-day trek that takes you through some of New Zealand’s most epic landscapes – think lush forests, crystal-clear rivers, and stunning mountain views.
This walk usually takes a few days to complete, but if you just want to check out a section of the track, you can do a day walk from Glenorchy. Bookings are not required for this as you will not need to use one of the huts.
You can do as much or as little as you like and still get a taste of everything the Routeburn is famous for.
14. Lord of the rings film locations
Glenorchy and its stunning surroundings served as key filming locations for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Just north of Glenorchy lies the Dart Valley, which became the dramatic setting for Isengard. Nearby, the beech forests along the road to Paradise doubled as Lothlórien.
There are many film spots scattered all over the place and it can be a bit hard to find all of them. If you are confident doing a DIY road trip then go for for it. If you would prefer to have it all organised for you then a tour is the way to go.
This scenic half day tour takes you to all the must see locations including some exclusive locations you otherwise would not be able to see. If you are a true fan, then this tour is something I wouldn’t want to miss out on.
15. Lake Sylvan Track

The Lake Sylvan Walk near Glenorchy is one of those peaceful little gems you can’t miss if you’re in the area. It’s an easy, laid-back trail that winds through beautiful beech forests with birds chirping all around.
The track is well-maintained, so no stressing about rough terrain, and it only takes about 45 minutes each way to walk to the lookout. If you want a bit more of a challenge you can do the loop track which takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes
At the end, you’re rewarded with Lake Sylvan’s calm, glassy waters perfectly reflecting the mountains. It’s a great spot to chill, take photos, or just soak in the beauty. Perfect for a simple adventure when you need a break from the hustle!
16. Diamond creek Track
The Diamond Creek Track is an easy, scenic trail perfect for a peaceful nature escape. The track is flat and well-formed, making it ideal for all fitness levels, including families.
It follows along the clear, sparkling waters of Diamond Creek, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll pass through native bush and open grassy areas, offering plenty of chances to spot birds and enjoy the tranquil vibe.
The trail is about 5 kilometres return and typically takes around an hour and a half to complete. Whether you’re looking for a casual stroll, a bit of birdwatching, or a chance to reconnect with nature, the Diamond Creek Track is a fantastic choice.

I have already told you about the popular red shed and wharf, but the waterfront in Glenorchy does have a lot more to offer.
There are lots of little coves to explore and spots that you will have all to yourself. While this definitely isn’t a must, if you are just wanting some quite time away from everyone else then this is the perfect thing to do.
The area is peaceful and perfect for soaking in the beauty of nature, with plenty of benches and open spaces to pause and take it all in.
21. Head over to Kinloch
If Glenorchy isn’t quite peaceful enough for you, then a short drive to Kinloch might be just what you’re looking for. This tiny settlement is known for its serene atmosphere and incredible access to outdoor adventures.
There’s not much to do here except soak in the breathtaking scenery — but that’s exactly the charm. With stunning lake and mountain views, it’s the perfect spot to switch off and simply enjoy nature.
For those staying overnight, the Kinloch Wilderness Retreat offers cozy accommodations and a fantastic restaurant serving delicious meals. If you’re after something simpler, the lakefront DoC campsite is a personal favourite — it’s basic, but when you’ve got a view like that, what more do you need?
Kinloch isn’t on everyone’s radar, but if you’re into hidden gems and quieter places, it’s definitely worth checking out.
How to Get to GLenorchy from Queenstown
Getting to Glenorchy from Queenstown is easy and incredibly scenic. The easiest way to get there is to drive. The 45-kilometre journey along the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on stops. If you don’t have your own car you can hire one from one of the many rental agencies in Queenstown here.
The route hugs the edge of Lake Wakatipu, offering jaw-dropping views of the turquoise water and surrounding mountains.
