Shakespeare Cliff Lookout – 2026 Guide

Sitting high above Cooks Beach, Shakespeare Cliff Lookout is one of those places I always end up popping into when I’m in the area. It’s such a quick stop, but it never feels like a throwaway visit.

Even on days when I don’t feel like doing much, this lookout still feels worth it, which is probably why it’s become one of my favourite easy to get to spots in the Coromandel.

If you’re wondering how easy it actually is to get there, the short answer is, very. You can park close by, follow a well formed track, and be standing at the lookout in no time at all.

There’s no long walk or tricky route involved, making it an easy add on to a beach day or a stop if you’re just passing through.

Track details

  • Location: Cooks Beach, Coromandel
  • Distance: Around 200m return
  • Time: 5-15 minutes return (longer if you want to take more photos)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Track type: Well-formed walking track

This track suits pretty much everyone. You don’t need a high level of fitness, and it’s a good option if you’re travelling with kids or just want something relaxed. The track is clearly defined and well maintained, so there’s no guesswork involved.

Because it’s short, it’s also a good one if the weather is a bit on and off. Even if clouds roll in, it’s still worth the walk, and if the sun comes out at the right time, the views really pop.

It is easy to see why it is a favourite spot for so many people.

How to get to the Shakespeare Cliff Lookout

To get to Shakespeare Cliff Lookout, head along Purangi Road and drive past the entrance to Cooks Beach.

Just before the road turns the corner and heads towards Flaxmill Bay, you’ll see a gravel road on your right-hand side. Turn onto this gravel road and follow it all the way up the hill to the top. This will bring you to the car park and the start of the track to Shakespeare Cliff Lookout.

If you’re coming from Whitianga, you can also catch the passenger ferry to Ferry Landing, then drive around to Cooks Beach and follow the directions above. The ferry is quick and makes getting across the harbour easy, especially during summer.

Parking

There’s a small car park at the very end of Shakespeare Cliff Road, right by the start of the track. Parking is free.

Because this lookout is popular and the walk is short, the car park can fill up during summer and on weekends. That said, people tend not to stay for too long, so spots usually free up fairly quickly if you’re willing to wait a few minutes.

Make sure you park neatly and don’t block the road or driveway areas, especially during busier times.

The walk

The walk starts directly from the car park and heads into native bush almost straight away. The track is mostly flat at first, with a little bit of uphill, but nothing too much.

This is usually why I stop here so often, it barely takes any time, but it still feels like you’ve done something worthwhile. Even if I’ve already been to the beach or have other plans for the day, I’ll still pop up here for a quick wander.

As you come out of the bush near the top, the views really open up. From the main lookout, you can see across Cooks Beach, over to Ferry Landing, and out towards Whitianga.

There are a couple of benches near the lookout, which makes it a nice place to sit, take photos, or just enjoy the view before heading back down.

Secret viewpoint at Shakespeare Cliff Lookout

A lot of people walk straight to the main lookout and then head back, but there’s a quieter viewpoint nearby that’s well worth checking out.

From the main lookout area, keep an eye out for a small side unmarked leading off through the bush. It isn’t a proper track, so it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. It’s is short and easy, and it leads to a more open coastal view.

This spot often feels a lot more peaceful than the main lookout, especially during busy periods. It’s a great place if you want photos without other people around or just want a few minutes to yourself.

Be sensible here, there are no barriers and there is a big drop down. Keep a safe distance from the cliff edge.

Lonely Bay

Lonely Bay sits below the Shakespeare Cliff lookout and is one of the best reasons to spend a bit more time in this area. If you’ve got the energy, it’s well worth combining the lookout with a walk down to the beach.

From the lookout area, you can take the track down towards Lonely Bay. It’s steeper than the walk to the lookout and involves more steps but it isn’t difficult.

Lonely Bay is small, sheltered, and often much quieter than nearby beaches. The water is usually calm, making it a great swimming spot on a nice day, and the surrounding cliffs and bush give it a tucked-away feel.

It’s a great place to slow down, whether that’s for a swim, a walk along the sand, or just sitting and taking it all in.

Other things to do nearby

Shakespeare Cliff Lookout is easy to pair with other nearby spots, which makes it ideal for a relaxed day out:

  • Cooks Beach: Perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or a long beach walk
  • Whitianga: Cafes, shops, hot pools and boat tours if you’re keen to explore more
  • Cathedral Cove: A bit further away, but doable as a longer outing
  • Hahei: A small family friendly beach town

Because everything is close together, you can keep plans flexible and just see where the day takes you.

Visiting the Shakespeare Cliff Lookout

Shakespeare Cliff Lookout is one of those places that proves you don’t need a long hike to get a great view. It’s easy to reach, quick to walk, and fits perfectly into a day around Cooks Beach and Whitianga.

I always enjoy stopping here when I’m nearby, even if it’s just for a short visit, and it’s a spot I happily return to again and again.
