Auckland is not the most scenic place in New Zealand, but places like Kitekite Falls, make this city just that little bit better. A beautiful waterfall, a peaceful bush walk and relaxing swim spots all combine to make Kitekite Falls one of a kind.

Is Kitekite Falls Worth Visiting?
Kitekite Falls are probably one of the best waterfalls in Auckland and is definitely worth visiting. If you have heard of this waterfall before, I am sure you would probably agree with me.
The 40 metre falls are quite spectacular to look at from below. But, one of the best things about Kitekite Falls, is that you can actually walk right up to the top. The views from here are pretty good and you can sit in the pools right on the edge as well.
I love the fact that the waterfall is so easy to get to, but it also feels like you are no where near the city. You are completely surrounded by native bush and all you hear is the water flowing in the stream and the local birds chirping away.
How to get to Kitekite Falls
Kitekite Falls is located in the Waitakere Ranges about a 45 minute drive from Auckland city. To get here you will need your own car, as there is no public transport.
To get here, you will need to drive out west to the Waitakere Ranges and onto Piha Road. You will follow this road through the ranges and make your way down towards Piha Beach. At the very bottom of the hill make a left into Glenesk Road and continue to the end.
The parking and entrance to the track is located at the very end of Glenesk Road and is impossible to miss.
Parking
Currently there are a couple of different spots to park near the walk to Kitekite Falls. On quiet days you will be able to park in the small area right by the track entrance.
If this is full, you can park in the grass area over the bridge to the left as you drive in. There is a big sign here that says ‘parking’ so you shouldn’t miss it.
Bonus Tip: Underneath the bridge by the carpark, there are some friendly eels that you can hand feed. They are protected so please do not harm them.
Kitekite Falls Tracks
The track leading to Kitekite Falls has recently been upgraded due to damages from a cyclone. The track is now one way rather than the loop style track it used to be. With the recent upgrade there have been some new boardwalks added as well as new route for the damaged section of track.
The walk is still very easy to follow, as you go along the same track all the way from the carpark to the waterfall. At the top of the small section of stairs, you turn right to go to the bottom of the waterfall and left to head up to the top.
One part to be aware of is that there is a small stream crossing you will need to get across. There are rocks and planks of wood there to use, and I didn’t need to get my feet wet.
Getting to the Top of Kitekite Falls
One of my favourite things about Kitekite Falls is that you can actually go to the top of the waterfall. There are a few pools up here which you can swim in and look over edge out to the view.
To get to the top, you will need to follow the side track that goes from the bottom of the falls. You will find the track the top of the stairs you you used to walk in. Instead of turning left to go back to the carpark you will continue straight and up the hill.
Once at the top of the waterfall, there are a whole lot of small pools which you can relax beside or even swim in. Cross the stream and climb down a little bit to find the best ones.
Things to do nearby
There are plenty of awesome things to do near Kitekite Falls. Piha Beach is always a great spot to visit on a summers day. There is also a great cafe here to enjoy as well.
If you enjoy hikes, then the Mercer Bay Loop is one of my favourite walks. The views from here are incredible and well worth the short one hour walk. The Waitakere Ranges is the best spot for hiking in Auckland so there are plenty of walks to choose from.
You can check out more waterfalls such as Fairy Falls or head to a strawberry farm to pick some berries and grab an ice-cream. The options really are endless.
