How to get to Karamatura Falls
Getting to Karamatura Falls is pretty straightforward and makes for a great little road trip from Auckland. From wherever you start, you will need to head west towards Huia, following Huia Road. Along this part, the road narrows and starts to feel more remote.
Expect a few twists and turns, but the views of the Manukau Harbour peeking through the trees make it well worth it. Once you reach the small settlement of Huia, you will pass over a one way bridge.
A few hundred metres past this you will find the entrance to the carpark. It is on your left and well signposted so it shouldn’t be too hard to miss.
NOTE: If you put Karamatura Falls into maps it might send you to Barn Paddock Campsite. This is not where you want to park. Instead, search for Karamatura Carpark.

Parking
The Karamatura Falls car park is the starting point for your waterfall adventure. Located just off Huia Road, it’s a decent-sized gravel parking area with enough space for several cars, though it can fill up on busy weekends.
You’ll find a few handy amenities here, including public toilets and a picnic area. The track entrance is at the far end of the carpark is well signposted, making it easy to find your way onto the walk.
Karamatura Falls Loop Track
The trail to the falls starts from the carpark, leading you through lush native bush along the Karamatura Loop Track.
It’s about a 45-minute walk one way, with a mix of well-formed paths, gentle inclines, and a few steeper sections to keep things interesting. It is much easier to get to than other waterfalls such as Fairy Falls and Kitekite Falls.
About 10 minutes into the walk you will come across a fork in the track.
If you just want to see the falls and want the quickest walk there, then follow the track along the stream to the right. Head across a couple of small streams, and before you know it, you’ll hear the sound of cascading water, your sign that Karamatura Falls is just around the corner!
If you would like to do the full loop track then you can go up to the left. This part of the track is a bit steeper still beautiful if you want to make your walk a bit longer.

Getting to the Waterfall
The waterfall is well signposted, so finding your way shouldn’t be a problem. Just follow the main track almost the entire way, except for one key turn.
After crossing the stream, keep an eye out for a sign on the edge of the track directing you to the right. Make sure to take this turn, otherwise, you’ll end up on a steep climb into the hills instead of heading toward the falls.
As you get closer, you’ll notice a few side tracks leading down to the waterfall. These well-worn dirt paths mark the spots where others have scrambled down to the rocks, perfect if you want to get a closer look!
Is Karamatura Falls Worth Visiting
Karamatura Falls is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a quick and rewarding nature walk near Auckland.
The track is well-maintained and takes you through beautiful native bush, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. It’s a manageable walk for most fitness levels, with a few gentle inclines but I didn’t find it too challenging at all.
Once you reach the falls, you’ll find a peaceful spot to take a break and just enjoy the sound of the water. I honestly could have sat here watching the waterfall for hours. Plus, it is great for a quick dip to cool off.
While it’s not the biggest waterfall in the Waitākere Ranges, it has a calmness that makes it a great escape from the city. Whether you’re after a casual walk or a fun outing with friends, Karamatura Falls is a great choice!

Karamatura Falls Camping
Camping in Karamatura Valley is a great way to get out in nature and enjoy more of the beatiful area close to the falls.
The Karamatura Valley campsite is a basic but scenic spot tucked in the Waitākere Ranges. It’s a walk-in campsite, meaning you’ll need to carry your gear a short distance from the car park, but the effort is worth it.
There’s a shelter, a long drop toilet, and a nearby stream for fresh water (though it should be treated before drinking). With the sounds of native birds in the morning and a star-filled sky at night, it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the tranquility of the bush.
Just remember to book in advance through Auckland Council and follow the kauri dieback cleaning stations to help protect the forest!

Karamatura Falls to Mount Donald McLean
The Karamatura Track up to Mount Donald McLean is a more challenging extension of the walk to Karamatura Falls, offering incredible views for those willing to take on the climb.
The track starts off gently, following the stream, but soon becomes steeper as it winds its way up towards the summit. Along the way, you’ll pass through the native bush, with glimpses of the surrounding valleys and coastline peeking through the trees.
Once you reach the Mount Donald McLean lookout, you’re rewarded with stunning panoramic views over the Manukau Harbour, the Waitākere Ranges, and even out to the west coast on a clear day.
It’s a tough but rewarding hike, perfect for those looking to push themselves a little further beyond the waterfall!
