Hiking The Mount Karioi Track, Raglan (2026)
Mount Karioi towers over Raglan, and if you’ve ever stared at it from town, you’ve probably wondered what it’s like to actually climb the track up it.
I’ve tackled it from the Te Toto Gorge side, and it’s steep, wild, and full of little challenges you won’t see from the road: rope and chain scrambles, twisty roots, and hidden viewpoints that make the effort worth it.
This hike is perfect for anyone chasing a proper adventure near Raglan. Whether you want to test yourself on a tough Raglan hike, soak in epic views of the Tasman Sea and Mount Taranaki, or discover the little details that make Mount Karioi so special.
From tricky sections that push you to focus, to quiet stretches of forest and the helipad at the summit, the Mt Karioi Summit Track delivers an unforgettable experience.

Important Track information
Distance: 6–7 km one way
Time: 3–4 hours one way, 6–7 hours return
Elevation: 668 metres
Difficulty: Medium to hard – steep, uneven terrain, rope/chain scrambles
Facilities: No toilets, no water
Start Point: Across the road from the Te Toto Gorge car park
There are two main tracks up Mount Karioi, the Karioi Track from Te Toto Gorge and the Wairake Track. You can do either route to reach the top, or technically combine them to go “right over” the mountain, though that requires a car at each end. I’ve only done the Karioi track, and it was plenty of adventure on its own.
Getting to Mount Karioi
The Mount Karioi Summit Track starts from the Te Toto Gorge car park, which is about a 25 minute drive from Raglan town.
To get there, follow Whaanga Road, it’s a beautiful drive but keep in mind the last stretch is a narrow gravel road that winds its way up the hill. Take it slow, especially if it’s been raining or you’re in a smaller car.
The car park is located on the right hand side of the road and is small but usually has space for several cars. The track starts just across the road, so it’s easy to spot
Remember, there are no toilets or water along the track, so bring plenty with you. Check the DOC for up-to-date track information and safety advice.

Mount Karioi Track: What to Expect on the Hike
The Mount Karioi track wastes no time getting your heart rate up. It starts off more open, with glimpses of the coastline, then plunges into thick native bush. Roots, rocks, and a few rope and chain scrambles keep you on your toes.
There’s also a small side track to a viewpoint, it’s not the main highlight, but a nice spot to pause and enjoy a different perspective of the coastline.
The hike is challenging, with plenty of “why am I doing this?” moments early on, but every glimpse of the ocean through the trees gives a boost to keep going. The ups and downs continue until the bush opens up at the summit.
Despite how rugged it looks in parts, I actually found the track really easy to follow. The trail is well-marked, and even the rope and chain sections feel pretty intuitive once you’re on them.

Mount Karioi Summit
At the top, a concrete helipad platform gives the perfect spot to rest and take in the views. The Tasman Sea stretches endlessly, Raglan’s hills roll out below, and on a clear day, you can even spot Mount Taranaki.
It’s a feeling of accomplishment that makes every steep, sweaty step worth it.
The timing worked out perfectly to stop at the concrete platform for lunch. It marks the turnaround point for the Te Toto Gorge route, so it’s the ideal place to rest up, eat, and soak in the view before making your way back down.
