This gorgeous little coastal town is one of my go-to summer escapes, and honestly, once you see it for yourself, you’ll totally get why I keep going back.
Tutukaka has that perfect mix of chilled beach vibes, epic ocean adventures, and little hidden corners that make you feel like you’ve stumbled onto your own private paradise.
Not only is it the gateway to the iconic Poor Knights Islands (aka one of the best diving and snorkelling spots ever), but it’s also packed with heaps of fun things to do on land and sea.
To help you make the most of your time here, I’ve put together a list of my favourite activities and must-do experiences in this epic slice of Northland paradise.
Whether you’re chasing adventures, beaches, or just a peaceful spot to unwind, Tutukaka has you covered.

The Best Things to do in Tutukaka
1. Snorkel with Perfect Day – Most Popular thing to do in Tutukaka
One of the best (and probably the most popular) things to do in Tutukaka is jumping on a snorkelling trip with Perfect Day Ocean Cruise.
Perfect Day is such a good option for anyone who wants to see the beauty of the Poor Knights Islands but isn’t a diver. I’m not a diver either, and this trip made it super easy to experience the marine life up close.
The main event is the snorkelling, where you’ll spot loads of fish and sea creatures that call the Poor Knights home. And if you’re not the most confident swimmer, the crew are really supportive and help you feel comfortable the whole time.
There are also plenty of fun extras like kayaking, exploring sea caves, and keeping an eye out for wildlife. We even had dolphins join us for a while, which was such a cool surprise.
It’s a great experience for all ages, and you don’t even have to get in the water to still have a good time — the scenery alone makes the trip worth it.
If you’re keen to go, check out the Perfect Day website to book your spot.

2. Diving with Dive Tutukaka
If you want go a bit further than just snorkelling, then going for a dive at the Poor Knights Islands with Dive Tutukaka is the perfect thing to do.
They will take you out to the best dive spots plus they have all the gear you need as well.
As well as the Poor Knights Islands, there are also some awesome wrecks which are perfect for diving and a great alternative to the islands.
If you have not dived before and want to learn, Dive Tutukaka also offer dive courses that enable you to learn all you need to know to get out in the water.
For more information, visit the Dive Tutukaka website.

3. Visit Whale Bay
Tutukaka has one of the most stunning coastlines in Northland with so many hidden bays and golden beaches. But none are better than Whale Bay.
About a 10 minute drive from Tutukaka, Whale Bay’s calm waters make it the perfect place to relax on a hot summers day.
Crystal clear water, soft sand and epic rock pools to explore are just a few of the main highlights of this incredible spot.
There is about a 10 minute walk along a gravel path from the car park down to the beach. However, the track is well maintained and not too steep so don’t let this deter you.
Even if you decide not to swim, Whale Bay is still a great beach to visit to just enjoy and relax.
In peak season the carpark and the beach itself can get full, so visiting early morning or later in the afternoon would help to avoid the crowds.

4. Walk up to the Tutukaka Lighthouse
Wanting to work up a bit of a sweat and enjoy some amazing views along the coast? Then make sure to walk up to the Lighthouse on the Tutukaka Heads Track.
The walk starts just a couple of minutes’ drive from the main centre, so it’s easy to get to. You’ll head out along the headland and across to Kukutauwhao Island, with native bush and heaps of birdlife keeping you company along the way.
The track climbs up and across the island all the way to the lighthouse at the top. Once you’re up there, you’re treated to wide open ocean views that stretch out forever. It’s one of those spots where you just stand there for a moment and take it all in.
Make sure you do this walk at low tide, Kukutauwhao Island can’t be reached when the tide is high.
This one is also a great option on an overcast day. It’s the perfect little adventure to add to your Tutukaka plans.

5. Learn to Surf – Most fun thing to do in Tutukaka
One of the most memorable things to do in Tutukaka is to learn to surf. There are some great surf beaches in the area and Tutukaka Surf are the best in the business.
Choose from group lessons, family lessons or private lessons to ensure you get the most out of your experience.
Everyone of all abilities are catered for through each of the three options.
Newbies in the group lessons will be taught surf safety, wave selection and surf technique. While those more experienced can advance their skills in a private lesson.
6. Walk the Matapouri Headland Track
Another great thing to do in Tutukaka is walking the Matapouri Headland Track.
The full loop takes around 90 minutes, and that includes the quick side track down to Whale Bay. You can start from Matapouri Beach or from the Whale Bay carpark, both options work, so just pick whatever’s easiest for you.
The track winds through beautiful native bush and opens up at a few spots to give you some unreal views along the Tutukaka Coast and out towards the Poor Knights Islands.
Since the track forms a loop, you’ll finish right back where you parked, which is always handy. There are a few up and down sections, but nothing too tough, and the track is well maintained the whole way.
Such a good little adventure if you want a mix of forest, coastline, and a couple of postcard worthy viewpoints.

7. Go Sea Kayaking
If you’re looking for a mix of adventure and chill vibes, the Pacific Highlights Tour with NZ Sea Kayaking is a must.
The tour starts in Kowharewa Bay and takes you along some of the best spots around the Tutukaka Harbour. Depending on the tide and weather, you might head north or south, they keep it flexible so every trip feels a little different.
On the tour, you’ll get to:
- Paddle through calm, clear waters past native bush, cool rock formations, and hidden coves.
- Stop at a quiet beach to relax, swim, or even snorkel.
- Explore little spots you wouldn’t see from the road or a big tour boat.
- Choose between a half-day or full-day trip, perfect whether you just want a taste or a full adventure.
It’s a relaxed, small group tour, so you won’t feel rushed, and the guides make it easy for beginners to join in.
8. Tutukaka Markets
If you’re in Tutukaka on the right day, the Tutukaka Markets are a fun way to spend a few hours. They’re held right on the field in front of the marina and have everything from fresh produce and delicious food to local art and clothing stalls.
The markets only run on select days over the summer season, and for 2025/2026, the dates are:
- October 25th
- November 22nd
- December 20th
- January 31st
- February 21st
- March 31st
These markets can get pretty busy, so make sure to arrive early to grab a good parking spot and have plenty of time to explore all the stalls. It’s a great way to pick up a few treats or unique souvenirs while soaking up the Tutukaka vibe.
9. Beach Hop
I can not even count how many weekends I have spent up in Northland exploring all the best beaches. Every new beach I go is always perfect and the beaches around Tutukaka are no exception.
My favourite beach Whale Bay has already been mentioned above but there are plenty of other great beaches in the area too.
Matapouri is probably the most well known beach in the area. It is a popular spot for families as there are many baches and places to stay right by the beach. There is small surf here but certain areas of the beach are much more sheltered.
Woolleys Bay and Sandy Bay north of Tutukaka are the go to surf beaches in the area. These beaches are a lot more exposed than others in the area meaning the surf here is quite good.
Beach hop between all these epic spots and create your own mini road trip.

10. Go horse riding
If you want to see the Tutukaka Coast from a totally different angle, a ride with Sandy Bay Horses is perfect.
Their guided treks take you through native bush, along stream valleys, and past hidden spots where you might even spot long fin eels.
There are rides for everyone, from easy, family friendly trails to more adventurous options, including one where confident riders can swim their horse in a quiet bay.
The rides run seasonally from December to April, and they provide helmets, you just need long pants and closed shoes. Their friendly herd of horses, from calm ponies to spirited thoroughbreds, makes it easy to find the perfect mount for your skill level.
It’s such a unique way to explore the coast and a highlight for anyone looking for something a bit different in Tutukaka.
11. Brunch at Shnapper Rock
In my opinion one of the best spots for food in Tutukaka is Shnapper Rock. This incredible place is open for breakfast lunch and dinner.
The food here is super fresh with some of the produce even being grown on site. Local and free range foods are also used in all the meals with emphasis on paddock to plate.
This is a very popular spot so you will need to make a reservation during the busier months.
