1. Bridal Veil Falls – Walk to the best waterfall in Raglan
Bridal Veil/Wairēinga Falls is by far one of the most popular walks in Raglan. The falls stand at an incredible 55 metres and are surrounded by stunning native bush.
The different view points along the way, are the reason Bridal Veil Falls is one of the best walks in Raglan.
This short walk is split into two 10 minute sections enabling people of all abilities to visit the falls. The first part goes to the top of the falls and the second all the way down to the bottom.
Starting at the small carpark on the side of the road, the first section the walk goes along a flat section of track winding along the river and through the native bush. The track then comes out at a clearing with an epic lookout over the top of the waterfall.
Here you will also find benches and picnic table to sit down and enjoy the views. This part of the walk is suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
The second section takes you down to the bottom of the waterfall. This part of the track is steep and is mostly stairs all the way down. Also, it is a one way track, so you will need to climb back up the stairs to the to get back to the car park.
If you are able to do this part of the walk I would highly recommend making the effort. There are a couple of picture perfect view points on the way down and the view up from the bottom really emphasises the height of the waterfall.
Don’t miss out on this awesome spot and add Bridal Veil/WairÄ“inga Falls to your list of walks to do in Raglan.
2. Mount Karioi – One of The best walks in Raglan
If day walks are your things then the walk up Mount Karioi is the one for you. This full day walk is tough but has epic views out over the Waikato making it one of the best walks in Raglan.
Starting at the Te Toto Gorge carpark this takes you right up to the top of Mount Karioi. You will make your way though farmlands and into the native bush. From here you will find yourself feeling like Tarzan. Climb over rocks and trees and use chains and ladders to pull yourself up the rock face.
There a a couple of cool lookouts along the way where you can stop and rest. The first main lookout is a 10 minute walk off a side track. From here you will get view out over Raglan.
It is about another hours walk to the summit. Here you will find a helicopter pad with 360 degree views out over the Waikato. On a clear day you can even see Mount Taranaki.
This is a full day walk and does become difficult at some points. Allow at least 6 hours to make it to the summit and return to the carpark.
This might be one of the most difficult walks in Raglan, but the adventurous climb and the views from the top will leave you smiling from ear to ear.
3. Wainui Reserve Bush Park – family walks in Raglan
Conveniently located right by Ngarunui/Main Beach, Wainui Reserve Bush Park has a variety of short walks along this beautiful stretch of coast line.
The 140 hectare reserve is owned by the Waikato District Council and serves as a great spot to relax and go on some small walks close to Raglan.
Walk along the stream and though the bush checking out all the native trees planted by a local community group. Then head up to the trig point and check out the magnificent views looking out over Ngarunui Beach.
This area is not only great for walks, but it is also a favourite picnic spot for Raglan locals. There are plenty of tables and toilet facilities in this part of the reserve as well.
The main carpark can get busy as this is also the parking for beach goers. Come early morning or late afternoon to get a good spot.
The Wainui Reserve Bush Park is an underrated spot in Raglan, even though it haas some of the nicest walks in the area. Make sure to visit for some walks on your next trip to Raglan.
4. Kaitoke Walkway
The Kaitoke Walkway is ideal for those staying in town wanting a quick, nice walk to get a bit of fresh air. It may not be one of Raglan’s most incredible walks, but it one that is good to know about.
This short 2 kilometre walk follows along the Raglan estuary. It is accessible from 3 different locations. Wainui Road, Kaitoke Street and Robinson Street.
The Kaitoke Street entrance is about half way along the track so start at either of the other ends to walk from start to finish.
The best time do do this walk is at high tide where the estuary looks the prettiest.
As the walk weaves along the waters edge, you will be taken through the bush and over a few cute streams. Just being out of the road adds a bit more peace and quiet to your short walk.
As an added bonus dogs are allowed on this walk as long as they are on a leash at all times.
The Kaitoke Walkway in Raglan is one of those perfect walks when you just want to quickly get out in nature. Very easy and stress free this track is perfect for all.
5. Harbour to Beach Walk – Raglan’s sunset walk
While it’s not an offical walk, he harbour to beach walk is one of my favourite walks in Raglan.
This walk is popular with a lot of locals in the evening, heading down to enjoy the sunset.
Starting right in town head over the Raglan Foot Bridge and head down onto the beach going up the harbour. Keep following the water up and you will eventually find yourself on Ngarunui/Main Beach.
Get the timing right and you will be walking up the harbour as the sun goes down and make it right out to the ocean just as the sun goes behind the horizon.
This walk is along the beach so it is completely flat, however the sand can be a bit harder to walk in.
If you don’t want to walk all the way to the end, you can just walk part way up the harbour and still get an amazing sunset view.
